From the 23 Sandy Gallery Website:
CALL FOR ENTRIES - PROSPECTUS SACRED | PROFANE Exhibition on view at 23 Sandy Gallery: November 7 - December 20, 2014
Submission deadline: August 18, 2014 23 Sandy Gallery invites artists to participate in SACRED | PROFANE, a juried exhibition of book art focusing on religion and spirituality.
THEME – SACRED | PROFANE is seeking book art focusing on religion and spirituality. We are looking for works that take a stand or cross the line between the sacred and the profane, the dichotomy of often-polarizing points of view.
Topics to consider along that razor-thin line: ritual and ceremony, creation and evolution, myth and memory, heaven and earth, superstition and scholarship, sacred and secular, rites and symbols, traditional and modern, occult and omnipresence, agnostic and atheistic, west and east. We hope to show a balanced number of sacred and profane works, so please do not be afraid to take on either, or both, themes.
Religion has a close relationship to books and texts. The Bible, the Quran, the Torah, Buddhist sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the Dao Dejing, along with many others, are all books associated with religion. With this exhibition, book artists have a chance to explore their own relationships to and rejections of religion and spirituality through the creation of their own sacred and profane books.
MEDIA – This exhibit is open to book and paper arts related works. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, broadsides and print on demand artist books are all encouraged.
JUROR – We are grateful to Jim Carmin, who will be the juror for SACRED | PROFANE. Jim Carmin has directed the operations of the John Wilson Special Collections at Multnomah County Library since 1998. Prior to that he was an art librarian at the University of Oregon and sold books, rare and otherwise, at Powell's City of Books in Portland. He has a Bachelor's in studio art and Masters in Library Science from Ball State University, a Masters in Art History from the University of Oregon, and has attended Rare Books School at the University of Virginia with classes in bindings and typography. Related interests include reviewing contemporary fiction for The Oregonian and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune; letterpress printing and bookbinding; and curating exhibitions in literary and book arts. This summer he'll be teaching a course on Medieval manuscripts and early printed books at Portland State University. AWARDS – Three artists will receive Best of Show Awards. Winners are selected upon installation of the show. In addition, we will also award the Library Purchase Prize. The winning work or works will be purchased by the gallery and donated to the artist book collection at the Multnomah County Library John Wilson Special Collections.

We will work hard to find good homes for all works included in this show.
ONLINE AND PRINT CATALOGS - 23 Sandy Gallery will publish a complete online catalog plus a full-color print catalog illustrating this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.
DISPLAY OF BOOKS - Here at 23 Sandy Gallery we feel very strongly that artist books need to be handled to be fully appreciated. Handi-Wipes are provided for gallery customers along with a friendly word about proper book handling. However, if your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a "do not touch" sign on it. If your book is an edition you are welcome to send a display copy.
SIZE LIMITATIONS - All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.
FRAMING - Wall-hung work can either be hung framed or unframed attached with magnets. If you are shipping framed work we recommend you ship the work with acrylic instead of glass.
ENTRIES - A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received online no later than midnight (PST) on AUGUST 18, 2014. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The gallery reserves the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry.
ONLINE SUBMISSIONS - Our online entry submission form can be found at the bottom of this page. All submissions will be made online.
FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee. When entering online you will pay via Paypal or any major credit card. You do not need a Paypal account to pay via credit card.
SALES - We encourage you to offer your artist books for sale. We are a commercial gallery, and we firmly desire to support artists with more than just a line on their résumé. However, we understand if you'd prefer that your artwork not be for sale. All work for sale will be placed on consignment. The Gallery keeps 40% of the sale price. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. If your work is not for sale, we'll ask you to provide an insurance value on the entry form.
Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to the gallery after the artwork is returned to the artist, the gallery works with the artist and client to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK - You may submit up to four photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in a high-quality, printed catalog, so make sure they are high quality photographs. And, don't forget about our library marketing campaign. Put your best photo forward as you never know who might notice your artwork. The 23 Sandy Blog features several articles about photographing your work. You can read them here.
PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to four views each of your three works submitted. Some key points to remember:
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the Gallery’s possession. The Gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to four views each of your three works submitted. Some key points to remember:
- Name your files as yourlastname-1-a.jpg, yourlastname-1-b.jpg, yourlastname-1-c.jpg, yourlastname-2-a.jpg, etc. Your last name is followed by a HYPHEN and then the artwork number, which corresponds with the entry number on the online entry form. Another HYPHEN and then the a, b, or c letter are the additional views of that work. Like this: yourlastname-1-a.jpg
- All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction.
- Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.
- Black backgrounds on your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive printed catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds.)
