Verdant, 2011
Created by Vanessa Bados, Tia Blassingame, Patti Harden, Natalie Jackson, and Tatiana Shukhin in 2011. Verdant,
a scroll book, provides a unique reading and viewing experience for the
present-day bibliophile and book connoisseur. The work explores
recycling abstractly in reference to the passage of time and
recollection of memories of the environment. The scroll was crafted with
handmade paper composed of recycled materials and abaca, a plant
harvested for its special fiber qualities, and each artist supplied his
or her own original writing and imagery, adding multiple perspectives to
the final product.
20" x 2.75" x 2.75"; 2 scrolls, which unrolled are 8" x 44" and 10" x 44".
Consisting of abaca and the authors' clothing, the paper was made at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and Corcoran College of Art and Design. Printed in Adobe Caslon, Pro and Humanistic typeface using polymer letterpress, linoleum block prints, and sandragraphs on handmade paper. Housed in a 4-sided cloth-over-boards wrapper with 2-fitted end caps, one fixed (to the plastic rod on which the scrolls are rolled) and one removable. Colophon and title printed on wrapper.
Edition of 40.
